Corel Painter X vs photoshop CS3

Journal Entry: Tue Sep 11, 2007, 4:07 PM
Corel does a much better blending job, though it lacks much of the editing features that photoshop possesses, nor am I fond of the brush tool. But it works well when creating effects, such as clouds/water, as shown in my latest return to digital work.

i just got Corel Painter X. Still haven't used it. Haven't used CS3. Is it much different than CS2? There wasn't much of a noticable difference between 7 and CS2 for me so I kinda figured CS3 wouldn't be a huge leap either.

The only reason I bothed with CS3 was because CS2 runs sluggishly on Intel based Macs, at least according to the reviews I saw.

Differences aren't major.

I use CS2, seems to serve me fairly nicely, but I've never tried Corel Painter X, so I can't compare them. How much does Painter go for on the market?

It should be around the 300-400$ range on Amazon, which I use often as a price check (though not 100% reliable).

One thing for sure though - Painter is only somewhat effective if you don't use a tablet.

Of course mousing it isn't impossible, I've done mousespeedpaints using Essentials 3 before, but only at a very primitive level.

The program is also highly designed for converting photos into paintings. Converting isn't the right word though, since the process is more sophisticated and in some cases requires a decent amount of input from the user (It's not necessarily a filter process like Photoshop)

As I mentioned, it can really only be appreciated if you're a tablet user or a photographer. Photoshop is still good on the basic level. I only use Corel to do basic blending, photoshop to do small details. Corel is supposedly a superior sketch program, but I have yet to browse some literature on that.
